Fiver Friday #493: TAKEOVER BY LINDSAY

As long as I am on vacation I am super thrilled to have another Fiver Friday Takeover scheduled for all my dear weekly readers.
This week by my friend and super star imager Lindsay Johnson from South Africa is taking over. I am sure you will love what he is sharing with you:
Writing from a wintery Cape Town and honoured to stand in for Andy while he is on a summer break. In keeping with his format, these are my 5 top picks for this week.
1. Plugin
This is one of those utility plugins that I do not go without. I won a PSP bundle in a radio imaging contest by sound designer Robert Dudzic more than a decade ago. This plugin was part of that bundle and I’ve never stopped using it. You’ll find it in every template and session that I’ve started since then. I use it mainly on my voice channels because it adds weight, warm and punch to every piece of voice that runs through it, but it work great on anything too. If you took away every compressor in my toolkit and left me with one, it’ll be this!

2. Inspiration
For the last 2 years I’ve been focused quite bit on staying active, fit and knee-deep in kettle bell workouts. I’ve found kettle bells are way more exciting than the standard weights and exercise equipment we’ve been using for decades. I do my utmost to not let anything get in the way of my morning workout routine (I even delay early recording sessions for it) and even when I’m not in the mood, I show up! Winter (as is the current case in Cape Town), is particularly challenging. But I find that if I’ve put in the work in the morning then my day in the studio is setup for success and I’m in the right frame of mind to take on whatever comes through.
My kettle bell inspiration workouts come from many different profiles I follow on Instagram – perhaps to0 many to list here – but if I could list just one, it’ll be this one.

3. Music
I hope you’ve heard, read or experienced this Danish electronic band before – Who Made Who. I discovered them 4 years ago on Cercle’s YouTube channel with a live performance in front of an Egyptian temple (check that out here https://youtu.be/BDwAlto-NKU?si=2G-obotzNU-m7gJs ). I find their style of music absolutely captivating (I do love electronic music) and I’ve been following the band ever since. Their latest live performance offering is nothing short of outstanding too – another performance for Cercle’s Odyssey gig in Mexico City. The show production along with their style of music is certainly worth a listen.
They did a live performance in Cape Town in February earlier this year but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it – what a bummer!
4. Web/Social/Whatever
I love watching YouTube content, as I think most of us do. One of my top channels on the platform is Yes Theory. I find their storytelling to be really excellent, their cinematography great and their overall production value definitely worth following and watching. The thing I love about their channel is that it’s focused on human connection and always striving to be a better human being.
Their latest episode on hidden Swiss bunkers is crazy!
5. Imaging
I’ve been on the Benztown Custom Imaging team for the past 5 years and it’s been great! Here is a mix of promos and sweepers from their affiliate stations that I’ve worked on.
Over the last 20 years of producing imaging my style has become a lot less cluttered with voice and production effects because the listener is always top of mind. Most of the time their (the listener) attention is elsewhere and we shouldn’t miss an opportunity when they do pay attention by cluttering the message with production whizz that we as producers think is cool. But I know I’m preaching to the choir on this one.
Enjoy your summer break, Andy!
