Need some atmosphere… or create your own Drones & Pads…

Hi guys, it’s Andre.

It’s now my 34th week here at Benztown and I’m still learning everything about production and radio imaging.

If you’re doing your imaging job right, you create a picture in the head of your listener. You’re able to create such a deep atmosphere, that it will feel like it’s real and not just the radio (maybe, I’m going over the top, but I guess you know what I mean ;))

But how to create an atmosphere without creating a big, epic movie soundtrack? The keywords are Drones & Pads

Drones & Pads are harmonic or monophonic effects created by holding one or a few notes constantly through the whole or most of the element. In short, by layering two or more ambient noises you can create great atmospheric harmonies (or disharmonies if you want to).

Try combining single notes played as long single notes or you can use an arpeggiator to create rhythmic passages. For creating tension, combine hits with dark Drones.

Drones & Pads are an easy and effective way to create atmospheres.

I really like Spectrasonics’ Omnisphere for creating Drones & Pads. A lot of great ambient sounds and really nice effects.

Check a small selection of Drones & Pads, I created.
