The Iron Imager Contender 2016 or how to hack the…

You all know personally I have been a big fan of Sidey’s work for a long time and I was so happy to see him participating on the Iron Imager Contest 2016. Sidey’s creative writing skills are extraordinary and he has won several RAP awards, Australian production awards and his track records for Triple M in Australia, creating fantastic work there for more than 20 years, is really impressive. I had the time to chat a bit with him about the upcoming contest, Dan Kelly (the reigning champ) and about his strategy to bring the belt to OZ for the first time!

So, here he is the Contender of Dan Kelly – the guy hacked the backstreet boys, the guitar hero from Sydney  Australia:  Enter Sidey.

Are you excited to come to LA? When have you been the last time?
I’ve never been to LA. So I’m pumped.

Can’t wait to get over there. Loads of people to catch up with or meet and I’m hanging for a real cheeseburger.

What do you think are your chances against Dan Kelly? Do you know his work?
All I know about Dan is that he has a nice belt. I’ve heard some of his stuff and he’s gonna be tough to beat. But I’ll give it a red hot go. I’ll probably just do a few tequila shots beforehand to relax and then just see what happens.

How difficult will it be to work off a portable workstation vs. your fully equipped Studio?
Yeah it’s gonna be weird. I’ve never even used a laptop. So ha ha this’ll be interesting. I’ve spent the last 15 years working on a Control 24 desk. But I’ll figure it out. Worst case scenario I just make something that sounds completely shithouse then we all get drunk.

How much percentage of your work is creative and writing compared to technique?

50/50 I guess. Depends what I’m making. Music promos tend to use a bit more production technique. But even when you’re making something completely silly there’s still a lot of technique involved in timing etc.

What is your favorite plugINs right now? Any new findings?
I love Eventide’s ultra channel. GTR is something I’ve had fun playing with. Other than that I’m pretty basic. Audio track, C1, Dverb, Metaflanger, signal gen, Futzbox.. I’m boring when it comes to plug ins sorry.

Anything you want to tell Dan ?
Yes.. Tell him the path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children.
