Actor, Director, and producer Penny Marshall has died.
The Bronx born actress started tap dancing at age 3, eventually teaching in her mother’s dance studio. Branching into acting, she followed her brother, producer Garry Marshall, to California, where she got her break as a regular on The Odd Couple. But it was a guest appearance on Happy Days that led to her and Cindy Williams’ hugely successful spin off, Laverne & Shirley. Penny Marshall’s directing career began in TV, but soon led to the big screen. Her second film, “Big,” starring Tom Hanks, became the first movie directed by a woman to gross over 100 million dollars. Other com- mercial and critical hits followed including A League Of Their Own and Awakenings, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. She continued to produce and direct for the remainder of her life, surviving a cancer scare in 2010, but succumbed to diabetes complications at age 75. We remember, beloved actress, acclaimed director, and American icon, Penny Marshall.
